First, it tickles me to see how accurately the right message come to me at the exact right moment, such as this one. I negotiate contracts for a living and there is no other arena, in my experience, that contains the dynamic of challenge and requirement of rapport, on such a regular basis as this. I decided a long time ago that although my "job" was to obtain the best deal for my company, my real mission was to meet people wherever they were through the negotiation process, and bring them through to a new, creative vision of shared function. This breakthrough only occurs if I am coming from a place of genuine interest in the other person and am willing to engage, (fight a little as you say) clearly, directly, but without rancor, for the good of all parties. Often then, during this process, somewhere down deep in the person or people I am working with something is triggered that says..."Yes, This is the way it should be...this is a process that I am happy to engage in." And the outcome? Even in failed negotiations, where the parties can't get to acceptable terms, the attitude is one of..."Thank you, Let's try again when it makes sense". Thanks again for providing a substantial jumping off point which in turn lead me to my own discoveries. Cliffe David,
